Updates from Houghton & Keweenaw Counties

  • Starting this week, Michigan Technological University will begin testing patient samples for COVID-19, working alongside regional health care providers. Michigan Tech has partnered with local hospitals to begin receiving and testing patient samples on campus to save doctors and health care providers at least 24 hours, and up to a week, of waiting for COVID-19 test results. The lab has the capacity to run 40 samples per hour on two machines, and the team has plans to expand with more equipment and staffing. Learn more at mtu.edu.
  • The Keweenaw County Board of Commissioners extended their Local Emergency Declaration for an additional 28 days at their regular meeting Wednesday April 15, 2020. Emergency Management Coordinator Chris Van Arsdale gave the board an update on the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Keweenaw County currently has no confirmed positive COVID-19 cases, but Van Arsdale stressed the importance of the Stay Home, Stay Safe Executive order and social distancing to slow the spread of the virus that has had a tremendous impact on the state and region.
